The HFNI Chronic Care Management Program is gaining ground. We are in the process of loading the first providers and their potential CCM patients into the data base, and anticipate launch of the program on September 1st. It will likely take two billing cycles to see tangible results, and we are confident that the processes we are using will produce an excellent yield, and will dovetail well with our other Care Coordination projects. These are all projects aimed at improving the health care outcomes of the members of our community based on the commitment of our local physicians working together, and will serve all of the community well. If you have questions, please call either Deborah Gant or Dr. Whibbs at 850-438-0818.

Recently, Health First Network, Inc. received notice from several of our shareholders that they would like to sell their shares. Pursuant to Health First’s Shareholders Agreement, the selling shareholders are authorized to sell their shares to "Permitted Transferees" – which includes existing shareholders and network physicians.

If you are interested in purchasing Health First shares from a current shareholder, and you are an existing shareholder or network physician, please contact E.L. Roche, Chief Financial Officer, at 850-438-0818. Your response will be an indication of your interest in purchasing shares, but it does not obligate you to purchase, nor obligate any shareholder to sell to you, any shares. After we determine the number of shareholders and network physicians interested in purchasing shares, we will follow up with relevant information for the potential buyers and sellers. Interested shareholders and network physicians will be listed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Oncological treatments have been at the center of several recently announced settlements with the OIG and the Department of Justice. In two OIG settlements, radiation oncologists in southern Alabama agreed to settlements totaling $12,119,822.85.

These Civil Monetary Penalties were the result of submitting claims for radiation oncology services without the direct supervision of a radiation oncologist or similarly qualified person, or without the timely review by a radiation oncologist.

The Department of Justice case saw a California oncologist pay $736,000 to settle a False Claims Act allegation because he billed government payors for chemotherapy drugs purchased from an unlicensed foreign distributor.

Physicians beware, that gift basket might be a kickback

Nurses' Registry & Home Health in Lexington, Ky., sent gift baskets and event tickets to physicians who referred patients to the facility, and those gifts are now the center of a pending Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute and False Claims Act lawsuit.

As part of our commitment to value added benefits for our physician network, Health First Network, Inc. has a strategic partnership with The Sigma Group at Morgan Stanley.

We thought you may be interested in Morgan Stanley’s latest edition of On the Markets, their monthly publication that summarizes the Global Investment Committee’s market outlook and includes thought-provoking essays that examine the forces shaping the investment landscape.

The August issue includes:

• “What Lies Beneath” Michael Wilson, Chief Investment Officer of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, says the US stock market’s “weak breadth” has many market pundits worried about the next big downturn. Wilson explains that this condition can last for years as the overall market rises at a slower pace, making it imperative to look at what lies beneath the surface in order to make money consistently.

• “The Dragon and the Elephant” China and India attract investors because together they account for nearly 40% of the world’s population. To invest in China, investors need to be selective; in India, they need to be patient. Sachin Manchanda and Katy Zhao, Equity Strategists at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, explain it all.
• “Why Gold Remains Stuck in a Bear Market” With the Federal Reserve and other central banks working to create inflation, why is gold, a traditional inflation hedge, trading near its five-year low? Lisa Shalett, Head of Investment and Portfolio Strategies for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, says it has to do with a slump in commodities overall—and anticipation of a Fed rate hike later this year.
