CMS unveils new SSNRI provider website

March 16, 2017

CMS announced the release of a website aimed specifically at providers wanting additional information on the Social Security Number Removal Initiative (SSNRI). Under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), CMS is required to remove social security numbers from Medicare beneficiary identification cards. CMS will begin to mail new cards with the new Medicare Beneficiary Identification number to participants starting in April 2018. Beginning in October 2018, through the 15-month transition period, when providers submit a Medicare claim using a patient’s valid and active Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN), Medicare will return both the HICN and the MBI on the remittance advice. After January 2020, Medicare claims that do not contain the MBI will be rejected.
