CMS finalizes 90-day reporting for 2016 meaningful use

November 2, 2016

CMS issued a rule finalizing changes to policies and payments regarding hospital outpatient and ambulatory surgical centers, as well as incorporating significant changes to the 2016 meaningful use EHR Incentive Program for eligible professionals (EPs). Most importantly, returning EPs can report for any consecutive 90-day EHR period in 2016 and 2017. CMS also finalized a one-time hardship exception for new EPs in 2017 that would exempt them from a payment adjustment in 2018. In addition, for all meaningful use measures, unless otherwise specified, EP actions included in the numerator can occur anytime within the calendar year in which the EHR reporting period occurs, even if outside the 90-day reporting period selected by the EP.
