New EHR contracting guide and HIT implementation resource released by ONC

October 11, 2016

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) published two new resources to assist physician practice executives with implementing and optimizing their EHRs and other health IT. The EHR contracting resource "EHR Contracts Untangled" is designed to support practices going through their planning and negotiation phases of an EHR or health IT acquisition. The resource helps practices understand and communicate their EHR requirements to potential software vendors, facilitate effective negotiation of contract terms, and better manage potential risks. Topics covered include EHR safety and security, data rights, interoperability, intellectual property, risk management and liability, resolving disagreements with software vendors, and tackling issues related to switching from one EHR to another. ONC also released the Health IT Playbook, an online resource offering tools and guides to help practices implement and optimize health IT. The Playbook focuses on issues such as patient engagement, interoperability, population health, value-based care and more.
