Summary: Final Rule Implementing Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act.

October 12, 2016

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a final rule implementing Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Section 1557 builds on existing language assistance requirements for patients with limited English proficiency and individuals with disabilities, and also prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in health programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. Beginning October 17, 2016, the final rule requires most physician practices to post notices of nondiscrimination and taglines that alert patients with limited English proficiency to the availability of language assistance services.
